What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu (aka Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as it is commonly referred to outside of Brazil) is a grappling based martial art and combat sport. It evolved from its Japanese roots in the 1920’s in Brazil by the Gracie family, and continued to grow for many decades after until its present day format. This style though previously established in its native country, became highly popular within the northern hemisphere after a series of performances from BJJ fighters in the early years of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). BJJ practitioners battled against competitors from various different martial arts backgrounds in no holds barred tournaments. The end result was always BJJ coming out the Champions. These events proved BBJ's efficiency and helped raise awareness all around the world, and the leading reason behind the art’s growth (but not the only one).
